House Rules

We are a small family-run operation and thrilled to welcome you into our jungle home. Because we are living in the jungle, we do have some things to go over to make sure that you’re all safe and comfortable during your stay…

Toilets

Probably one of the BIGGEST POINTS! Septic systems in Costa Rica are fragile – please do not place paper or feminine products in the toilet and use the trash can instead to avoid plumbing issues. To be clear, toilet paper cannot go into the toilets and doing so can lead to some very stinky messes. We will have a housekeeper pass through the rooms to collect bathroom trash daily and restock extra trash bags, should you need to replace your trash sooner. If you’re using our compost toilets (at the shala), please place a small handful of wood chips in the toilet prior to exiting…

Energy Use

We try to use as little energy as possible to keep the Blue Zone blue, so please turn off the lights and your A/C when leaving your room for the day.

Water Use

At Rayos, we are very lucky to have our own well that provides us with clean, drinkable water. However, it is a well, and wells can run dry, so as a community, we have to be mindful to conserve water, particularly in the dry months. Simple tips: do not take long showers or leave the tap running unnecessarily.

Towels

You’ll find 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel in your room – please DO NOT take them outside of your room for use at the pool or beach as they will get very stained from the jungle elements. We will charge a $20 USD fine for lost or damaged towel.

We do provide pool towels but please do not take them to the beach, as the fine sand will clog up our washing machines.

If you go down to the beach, bring your sarong or ask the reception desk for a beach towel, we occasionally have a few extras.

Laundry

Wash and fold service is offered on the property for $10 USD charge per load, feel free to share with your roomie if you’d like! Laundry service is offered twice during the week on Tuesday and Friday. Pleae drop off by the end of breakfast so you can pick up after lunch. If you need a garment bag, please collect one from reception either the night before or morning of. Bath towels will be changed regularly.

Power Outages

Power outages and surges can be common here, particularly in the rainy season when lighting, wind, and heavy winds can lead to downed lines. The electric company has become quite effective at finding the source of the problem and repairing it quickly. It is recommended that you do not leave any of your electronic devices plugged in when you are not present as power surges can damage the cables or even your phone or computer. This is a common issue here in Guanacaste, particularly with Apple products.

You will find candles in your room in the event of evening power outages so you won’t be left in the dark. We also recommend bringing a flashlight with you for getting around in the evenings.

Outdoor Showers

If you take a trip down to the beach, please use the outdoor showers to wash off any beach sand before entering rooms. Outdoor showers are located at the Tucan, Mono, Lora, and Colibri villas, and next to the pool.

Be Cautious

Be cautious while walking on all outdoor tile surfaces and staircases (including pool area) to avoid slips & falls, and also be cautious walking on the paths through the jungle. Please use a flashlight if the path lights are not enough. Also, there are lots of jungle critters (snakes, scorpions, spiders) around. It’s important to always look where you’re going, use a flashlight, and never walk around barefoot after dark.

Check In and Check Out

Check in is 3PM on the date of your event or retreat. We cannot guarantee that your room will be available any earlier, and please be aware that we do not have food available outside of set meal times. Check out is by 10AM on the last day of the retreat or event (unless you have extended your stay with us) so please make sure to be out of your room by that time. Please return your room key to us at the front desk and note that we will charge a fine of $30 USD fine for a lost room key or AC remote. If your cab is later on departure day, you are welcome to hang out in the common space until you leave

Leave no Trace

Costa Rica is rich with natural beauty, and we like to keep it that way. Please be conscious of how much waste you are producing and that it is being disposed of in the best possible way! For extra credit, you can pick up any plastic or other waste you encounter on the beach or in any natural spaces you pass through.

Dining

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served daily at scheduled times. We ask that you show up on time! That way the food is fresh, and everyone gets to eat together. There will not be extra food prepared for guests that miss meals.

Please bus your dishes and bring them to the dishwashing area. It helps a great deal if you wash your own dishes.

We compost, recycle or reuse all glass bottles so please take care to place trash in appropriate bins located in the dishwashing area (compost in the red bucket, regular trash in the green, glass bottles next to the guest fridge)

Please understand that our kitchen is off-limits to guests. It is against health codes for guests to be in food preparation and storage areas. If you have questions or requests, it is better to speak with someone from the front desk or beverage counter.

Can We Drink the Water?

Yes, you can drink the water from our cooler or from your own bathroom sink, as all water comes for our own private well – but please bring a refillable water bottle!

We try to reduce plastic waste and therefore do not sell bottled water on premises.

Theft

Petty theft can be a serious issue in Costa Rica. Rayos Del Sol equips all rooms with locks, provides guests with keys, and strongly advises guests to keep their rooms locked and valuables hidden from sight. Rayos Del Sol assumes no liability, financial or other, for any valuables lost or stolen on the premises. Rayos Del Sol does however commit to remain vigilant and protect its guests from such occurrences to the best of its abilities.

Lost and Damaged Hotel Items

Costs to reimburse: $20 USD for lost or damaged bath towel/mat, $30 USD for lost room key, $60 USD for lost A/C remotes.

Rayos Del Sol asks all guests to throughly read through and sign our liability waiver as part of the registration process for all retreats and events taking place on our property. Registrants will be directed to this section via a link to review once again before signing.
